South Eastern Hound Club Premier Open Show 2011 Critique

Puppy. 2 present.

1st, BP & Group 3. Helps' Beardswood Quinlan. 6 mnth old dog puppy who has a soft dark eye, excellent pigmentation and ears set high. Good length of neck, good shoulder placement and good length of upper arm. A well bodied puppy with wonderful depth through the heart, good topline, his croup is wide and sloping and he has great length and breadth in first a second thigh. His movement showed a lovely long, ground covering stride when he wasn't trying to play with his sister !

2nd. Helps' Beardswood Quintessence. Litter sister to 1. She has a beautiful head with excellent pigmentation, soft eye but would prefer it slightly darker, and very small high set ears. She is of balanced proportions having a good neck/shoulder/upper arm assembly, her body is deep and her back leg shows good length of both first and second thigh. She is well boned and has a crisp coat. She moved well.

Junior. 6 entered/5 present.

1st. Finnett & Heathcote's Hyndsight Dreams Unwind. 14 mnth old bitch. Small head with well folded high set ears and an aqueline nose, her neck is long and muscular and set into a fair shoulder. She has great depth through the heart. Well boned, pasterns slightly sloping and feet well knuckled. Ribbed well back and with beautiful sweeping hindquarters with great width in first and second thigh. Hocks well let down. She was balanced on the move showing a long active stride.

2nd. Barter & Christian's Ehlaradawn Raindances. 13 mnth old bitch. She has a feminine head and a soft expression. Good neck set into a fair shoulder, well ribbed back. She still needs to deepen in chest but time is very much on her side. Good topline and lovely wide, sloping croup. Good width of first thigh. Movement fair.

3rd. Jordon's Hoddingrey Beeswing.

Novice. 7 present.

1st & RBOB. Bunce's Panatwick Aethelwyne. 23 mnth old bitch. She has a small, very feminine head with an aqueline nose, the softest of expression in her lovely dark eye, good pigmentation and small, high set ears. Shoulder well placed, good length of upper arm and good forechest, pasterns sloping, feet well knuckled, good depth through the heart and well ribbed back. Slight rise over the loin, croup sloping and wide with long, strong hind leg which she used very well on the move. Have noticed her since she was young and at last she is maturing into a lovely hound.

2nd. Barter & Christian's Hoddingrey Strahanna of Ehlaradawn. 18Mnth old bitch. A more heavily built hound than I. Dark eye and a kind expression. Strong neck into a well placed shoulder and good upper arm. She has great depth through the heart, is well bodied, her topline is correct. Hindquarters are strongly made and hocks close to the ground. Good feet. She moved very soundly.

3rd. Girling's Pyefleet Scrumpie.

Graduate. 2 present.

1st. Smith's Rosslyn Pollie of Nimloth. 3 yr old bitch. A small, feminine head with a soft look in her eye, excellent neck into good shoulder but I would prefer more length of upper arm. Well ribbed back and she has good depth through the heart, her topline shows the desired rise over loin and her croup is well sloped. Good length hip to hock and hocks well let down. Movement was OK.

2nd. Girling's Pyefleet Sabine. 22 mnth old bitch. A heavier type of hound to 1, who looked as though she could do a very good day's work in the field and that that is where she would much prefer to be ! She has a wonderful front assembly and a strong neck giving the impression she could reach for and hold her prey with great ease. Good topline, well bodied, great width of first and second thigh, good bone. But she simply would not show any movement today.

Open Dog. 2 present.

1st. Gilhooly & Morrissey's Lord Seafield of Hartvalley. At 6 yrs old belies his years. He is a very masculine dog with a kind eye and with excellent pigmentation. His neck is well muscled and flows into a good forehand. Pasterns sloping and well knuckled feet. Good depth and length of body. Long, broad sloping croup. Good width of first thigh. Crisp coat of good length. He moved well covering lots of ground with his long, active stride.

2nd. Finnett & Heathcote's Hyndsight The Gibson. A smaller dog with a lovely head having an aqueline nose, small well folded high set ears and a kind eye. His neck is of adequate length and his shoulder well set. He is a very well bodied dog showing great depth and being well boned. He shows great width of first a second thighs and gives an impression of being a powerful hound. On the move he was not co-operating with his handler and so assessing movement was almost impossible.

Open Bitch. 6 entered/4 present.

1st. & BOB. Finnett & Heathcote's Hyndsight Into The Mystic. To my eyes a most beautiful bitch. Her head is long and tapers to her slightly aqueline nose, her eye is dark with a black rim and a soft expression. Her ears are small, black, well folded and set high. Her neck is beautifully arched at the nape and flows absolutely perfectly into her well set shoulder which in turn is attached to her upper arm which is of good length. Fore chest and depth of body excellent. Ribbed well back and having just the right amount of 'spring' to give good heart and lung room. Her topline is correct – perfect width between her shoulder blades, rise over loin and sweep of croup down into a powerful hind leg having great width of first a second thigh. Hocks well let down and feet well knuckled. Crisp coat. She moved with a long, true stride covering the ground seemingly effortlessly and giving an impression of a hound who could go all day.

2nd. Gilhooly's Freyja At Nobys. A smaller bitch and so sound – unlucky to meet the winner today. She has a beautiful head with the most meltingly soft expression, neat well folded ears, a good length of neck into good forehand. Great depth, just the right amount of bone for her size, good feet. Well ribbed back and with powerful hindquarters with hocks well let down. She moved actively and well.

3rd. Finnett & Heathcote's Hyndsight Fallen Angel.
